The driver of the van, a 31-year-old man from Chester, along with two passengers, a 60-year-old man from Springfield and a 75-year-old man from Brookhaven, tragically lost their lives in the collision.
Traffic was severely impacted as the roadway between routes 252 and 352 was closed shortly after the incident at about 8:20 a.m. The southern lanes of the bypass remained blocked for several hours, finally reopening around 1:10 p.m. as cleanup efforts were completed.
The driver of the trash truck, a 36-year-old man from Brookhaven, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but their efforts were hampered by the conditions of the crash scene.
