William Monahan has been appointed as the new President of Swan Point Cemetery in Providence. With over 25 years of experience in cemetery management, he aims to enhance community engagement and implement innovative services while respecting the cemetery’s historical integrity.
William Monahan brings over 25 years of experience in cemetery management and leadership to his new role. Before taking this position, he served as the Director of Operations at Woodlawn Cemetery in Massachusetts, one of the busiest cemeteries in the state. During his tenure there, Monahan oversaw more than 1,300 interments, cremations, and mausoleum entombments annually, showcasing his ability to manage high-volume operations effectively.
Under his leadership at Woodlawn, Monahan developed new products and programs to address market demands, emphasizing the need for innovative services in the cemetery sector. He was also instrumental in leading the design and construction of over 600 niche columbarium for cremation memorialization and created more than six acres of new in-ground burial inventory. Monahan’s background in landscape design and construction began earlier in his career when he worked as a Landscape Foreman at Woodlawn.
As President, Monahan will work closely with the Board of Directors and staff to implement Swan Point Cemetery’s long-range and master plan. His leadership will focus on land development, enhancing crematory services, and increasing community engagement through improved outreach and marketing strategies. Monahan’s vision includes continued growth and innovation, ensuring Swan Point remains a leading choice for families during difficult times.
Monahan succeeds Anthony Hollingshead, who is retiring after 20 years of service as President. Hollingshead oversaw significant growth in facility expansion, team development, fiscal stability, and community outreach initiatives. The transition to Monahan is viewed positively, with the Board expressing confidence in his ability to maintain and enhance the cemetery’s reputation.

Monahan, currently residing in Hanover, Massachusetts, began his professional journey in residential landscape architecture after earning a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. His transition into the nursery industry included a role as the Wholesale Sales Manager at a major wholesale and retail nursery in New England, where he gained further industry expertise.
