Crowded terminal at T.F. Green Airport during July 4th holiday travel

News Summary

T.F. Green Airport anticipates a large influx of travelers over the Fourth of July holiday, expecting around 5.8 million fliers as part of a total 72.2 million domestic trips across the U.S. This uptick follows a significant increase from last year. The airport, recently named the sixth best in the nation, is also implementing new security measures including REAL ID requirements while continuing to enhance travelers’ experiences. The introduction of a new overflow parking lot aims to accommodate the increased traffic, ensuring a smooth journey for vacationers.

Warwick, Rhode Island – T.F. Green Airport is gearing up for a significant surge in travelers as the Fourth of July holiday approaches, with expectations that 72.2 million Americans will embark on domestic trips between June 28 and July 6. This figure represents an increase of over 1.5 million travelers in comparison to last year. Among those, approximately 5.8 million individuals are projected to take to the skies during the same timeframe.

Many travelers passing through the airport on Friday expressed a mix of excitement and apprehension about the holiday traffic. Despite the anticipated influx, some travelers conveyed confidence in their travel plans amid the busy airport conditions.

In addition to preparing for the holiday travel rush, T.F. Green Airport is celebrating a noteworthy achievement. Recently recognized as the sixth best airport in the nation by the Washington Post, the airport’s ranking highlights its ongoing efforts to enhance the travel experience for passengers. Recognition has been met with pride among local Rhode Islanders, who have expressed admiration for the facility’s improvements.

Notably, Portland International Airport in Oregon received the top ranking for U.S. airports for 2025, further highlighting the competitive landscape among airports nationwide.

Amid the celebrations, T.F. Green Airport has implemented a new identification policy requiring travelers to present a REAL ID to board flights as of May 7. While travelers can still use standard state-issued driver’s licenses for the time being, the airport has witnessed an uptick in the presentation of U.S. passports as a form of identification. TSA officials have reported that the transition to REAL ID compliance has been smooth and that wait times at security checks remain typical.

As of January 31, 2025, 56% of Rhode Island’s nearly 860,000 driver’s license holders have already obtained a REAL ID. Despite these new requirements, alternative forms of identification remain accepted, easing the entry process for travelers. Frequent travelers have noted that security measures at the airport have not shifted dramatically with the implementation of the new requirements, indicating that the transition has been well-managed.

Travelers have also responded positively to the heightened security standards, with some expressing a preference for universal compliance with the REAL ID regulations, which aim to improve identification verification processes for all passengers.

In line with its growth, T.F. Green Airport is actively promoting various improvements aimed at bolstering its success and accommodating increased passenger volume. Notably, December 2024 marked a record month for the airport, reporting a 27.3% increase in passenger volume compared to the previous year. As New England’s fastest-growing airport, T.F. Green surpassed four million passengers for the year, exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

Future improvements at T.F. Green include the addition of new routes and enhancements to current infrastructure, which are expected to further propel the airport’s growth in the coming years. To assist with the anticipated increase in travelers during peak times, T.F. Green Airport has opened a new overflow parking lot called “Lot O.” This facility charges a rate of $12 per day and offers a free shuttle service, designed to accommodate passengers efficiently.

With preparations underway and heightened security measures in place, T.F. Green Airport is stacking up for an eventful Fourth of July, signaling a return to robust travel patterns as more Americans take to the skies.
