Providence Hosts Celebratory WaterFire Event for Educators

Providence recently showcased Rhode Island educators during a special WaterFire lighting event that took place on Saturday evening. This yearly celebration included a teachers’ awards ceremony and a torch procession, commencing at Memorial Park at 5 p.m.

Nearly 85 district Teachers of the Year and other educators recognized for their excellence took part in the festivities, which highlighted their significant contributions to the educational community. Catering for the event was handled by culinary students and chef instructors from various career and technical education programs across the state, emphasizing the collaboration of students in contributing to the celebration.

To provide additional services at the reception, cosmetology students from Providence offered complimentary mini manicures, face painting, and hair braiding to guests. In addition, carpentry and graphic design students were responsible for designing and creating signage and other decorative items for the event.

Event Schedule and Community Participation

The lighting ceremony was scheduled to commence shortly after sunset at around 6:30 p.m. WaterFire officials also took the opportunity to announce updates for the upcoming 30th season of the event, which will feature six full lightings, two partial lightings, and four “Starts at Sunset” events on the Providence Pedestrian Bridge for the 2025 season.

The 2025 season is set to kick off in mid-May with a “Starts at Sunset” event, leading into the first full lighting on Saturday, May 31. Returning themed events will include celebrations for Rhode Island Educators, Breast Cancer Survivors, and Veterans, highlighted by a special full lighting event on the Fourth of July.

Ed Cabral, the Director of Sponsorships and Corporate Relations at WaterFire Providence, emphasized appreciation for the sponsors, community partners, and supporters who contribute to sustaining the event’s tradition.

Upcoming Lighting Dates and Programming

This year’s scheduled lighting dates are May 31, July 4, August 9, September 27, October 4, and November 1. Each full lighting involves illuminating more than 80 braziers from Waterplace Park to South Main Street Park, typically concluding around midnight. Onshore programming for full lightings includes various performances and vendor options, such as food trucks and artisan tents.

Partial lightings, on the other hand, feature limited arrangements and do not include onshore programming. Concerns had previously arisen regarding corporate donations, as WaterFire was facing a $750,000 deficit last year, raising questions about the future of the event. However, with state support of $375,000 in grant funding and insurance costs reaching $225,000, the organization is optimistic about continuing its legacy.

Significance of WaterFire Event

As a noteworthy public art installation in Providence, WaterFire is celebrated for its stunning visual impact and community engagement. The efforts put forth by students and educators at this year’s event exemplify a collaborative spirit and recognition of the essential role of education in the community.
