West Nile Virus Detected in East Providence, R.I.

West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in East Providence, Rhode Island, following a positive test from a mosquito sample collected on September 22, 2025. This development comes as the state reports its first probable human case of the virus this year, involving a resident from Providence County who is currently hospitalized.

The individual in their 60s began experiencing symptoms in early September and is undergoing treatment in a hospital. Confirmatory testing for WNV will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after the person’s positive test result.

Health officials have indicated that the risk level for West Nile virus in Rhode Island is currently high. So far, 13 mosquitoes have tested positive for WNV this season, with East Providence identified as a hot spot due to seven positive tests. No positive tests for other mosquito-borne viruses, such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) or Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV), have been reported for the current season.

Authorities are advising residents in East Providence and across Rhode Island to take precautionary measures against mosquito-borne illnesses. Recommendations include eliminating standing water around homes, including unused swimming pools and clogged gutters, as these areas can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Despite the prevalence of WNV, most individuals infected with the virus do not show symptoms. However, about 1 in 5 infected individuals may develop a fever along with other symptoms. More severe cases, which may include serious illnesses, can occur in roughly 1 in 150 infected individuals and can potentially be fatal. Currently, no vaccines or specific treatments are available for West Nile virus in humans.

In 2024, Rhode Island recorded six human cases of WNV, along with one case each of EEE and JCV. As of now, no mosquitoes have tested positive for these viruses this season, following the most recent round of testing on September 15, which showed negative results for WNV, EEE, or JCV.

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) provides weekly updates on arboviral surveillance data on their website, which includes testing results and ongoing monitoring efforts. In addition to monitoring, the RIDOH has also released tips to help residents eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites, although specific details were not included in the current report.

As the summer season comes to a close and with the onset of fall, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting themselves against mosquito bites and potential virus transmission.
